Convert lunar and solar dates

You can also pick from the calendar below; every day shows its lunar date.

This only converts dates; it does not judge lucky or unlucky days. For dates by custom, ask the elders in your family.

Tết in the coming years

The 1st day of the 1st lunar month, worked out by this very tool. Tap one for the details.

Worked out on Vietnam time (GMT+7), so in some years Tết falls on a different date than in China (GMT+8): one day apart in 2007 and 2030, a whole month apart in 1985 (21/1 against 20/2).

Small tips

Write the wedding date so the whole family understands

  1. Print both calendars on the invitation

Grandparents tend to remember the lunar date, friends the solar one. “Sunday, 06/12/2026 (day 27 of lunar month 10, year Bính Ngọ)” is clear to everyone.

  2. Watch for years with a leap month

In a lunar year with a leap month, one month happens twice. When the elders pick a day, check whether they mean the ordinary month or the leap one.

  3. Check the day of the week

Once converted, look at which weekday it falls on, and whether it clashes with a public holiday or with either family’s work, before you print the invitations.

How does the tool work out lunar dates?

With Hồ Ngọc Đức’s astronomical algorithm, which computes new moons and principal solar terms on Vietnam time, GMT+7, matching the lunar calendar used in Vietnam. Every calculation runs in your browser.

Why is Tết on a different day from China in some years?

The Vietnamese lunar calendar runs on GMT+7, the Chinese one on GMT+8. When a new moon falls between 11 pm and midnight, the two start the month a day apart, as with Tết in 2007 and 2030. Some years differ more: Tết 1985 was 21 January in Vietnam and 20 February in China.

What is a leap month, and how do I enter one?

Every two or three years the lunar calendar adds a month to stay in step with the seasons. It is called a leap month and carries the same number as the month before it. In the Lunar → Solar direction, choose the month and press “Leap month”; the button only works when that year has that leap month.

Does the tool pick lucky days or check compatibility?

No. It only converts dates and shows the Can Chi and solar term, like a wall calendar. For choosing a date by custom, ask the elders in your family.

What do full and short months mean?

A lunar month of 30 days is a full month; one of 29 days is a short month. If you choose the 30th of a short month, the tool tells you so you can pick again.

Which years can I convert?

From 1800 to 2199. Outside that range the maths still runs, but we have not checked it against printed calendars, so it is locked for now.
